Notes From The Barre – May 2015

Pretty much all of us know that sitting while hunched over a desk for hours at a time can lead to poor posture, tight muscles and, almost certainly, back and neck impingements.

But sitting too long can cause other more serious problems. It can slow your metabolism, increase glucose levels in your blood, and raise your blood pressure. That means a greater risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke, depression, and cancer.

Think you are immune to all this because you exercise regularly? Nope. Even if you are in tip-top shape, your health is at risk if you spend too much time sitting. Studies have shown the most rigorous exercise program does not combat the negative effects that result from long hours in a chair.

But here is the good news. You can lower those risks simply by getting up and moving 3 to 4 minutes every hour.

This past month I created a BeyondBarre workout that uses a chair. Perfect for the office!

This BeyondBarre version is moderate enough to do before you head to a staff meeting (without needing a shower), yet effective enough to increase circulation and energize the mind all while toning the body.

Divide this workout up into the BeyondBarre Elements so that it fits easily into your daily work breaks. Be sure to do a segment every hour.

Your body will thank you!

Yours in fitness,

Colleen
